“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela
In honor of the 4th of July, members of the Assistance League of Los Angeles are reflecting on the meaning of freedom. Karla recalls meeting Chris, a 5th grader with a shy and reserved demeanor, during Operation School Bell. Chris traveled from station to station and collected brand new gym shoes, backpacks, and clothing with a sullen disposition. At the very last station- the book station- Chris’ eyes lit up. With book in hand, Chris looked up at Karla and exclaimed, “This has been the very best day of my life!”
What better freedom is there than helping others discover a sense of relief from their personal strongholds- whether that is with new school uniforms, a kind smile, or a new book. Thank you, Karla and all League members, who offer a piece of freedom to Los Angeles children.
