History __________

Not content to sit by as people suffered, a group of prominent society women in Los Angeles formed a new charitable organization in the mid-1890s named the Assistance League.

Anne Banning was a member of that small group and in April 1906 Mrs. Banning, her friend Mrs. Ada Edwards Laughlin, and the Assistance League ladies responded to the devastating San Francisco earthquake by organizing a relief unit. Soon the ladies “wished to be a permanent organization and be of assistance to everyone who needs it” and in 1919, the Assistance League of Southern California was officially formed.
