The Anne Banning auxiliary, formed in 1965, expanded their service to incorporate direct participation with children through a program named Operation School Bell (OSB). Today, OSB provides required school uniforms, recreational clothes, shoes, grooming kits, books, backpacks and other necessities free of charge to children in grades K-5 referred by LAUSD. In addition to the on-site location, the auxiliary has a mobile version called Operation School Bell on Wheels. An 18-wheel mobile tractor-trailer, fully outfitted with dressing rooms, travels to Los Angeles Unified schools.
During one “Wheels” day, a little boy selected a brand new pair shoes. While walking to the next station, he jumped around so much that his school counselor asked him to calm down in order to get fitted for a jacket. He replied, “I can’t stop. My feet are so happy!” Anne Banning members were touched to see that the little boy would return to class feeling like a million bucks!
